True Detective
I think the ultimate beauty of the True Detective character arc is that while it seems to mainly revolve around atheist Rust and his existential despair, with Gung Ho Marty fulfilling a sort of bumbling sidekick role, the essence of the story actually resolves to Marty's visceral spirituality in the end
The Marty vs Rust dynamic, however, does strike me as a bit modern in its presuppositions, i.e Rust as the cool and collected, intellectual Atheist, and Marty as the rugged, hard-of-thinking common man who believes in “fairy stories”. I’m reminded of Guenon’s remarks about the inversion of traditional caste systems - in the pre-modern Age, Rust’s aristocratically aloof character type would have been an individual of a mystical disposition, with proletarian meat ‘n’ potatoes Marty being either a total unbeliever or just profanely illiterate
Yeah, I get TD's nearly 10 years old now, but time's a flat circle, so I'm good
